EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Job Purpose

The Executive Director (ED) of Saskatoon Makerspace is the strategic and operational leader responsible for driving the organization’s mission of fostering creativity, collaboration, and innovation within Saskatoon’s maker community. The ED oversees all aspects of organizational development, financial sustainability, program delivery, community engagement, and staff management, ensuring the Makerspace thrives as a hub for artists, entrepreneurs, and hobbyists.

Duties and Responsibilities

‍ ‍LEADERSHIP AND DEVELOPMENT

  • Lead the development and execution of the Makerspace’s strategic plan in collaboration with the Board of Directors

  • Act as a spokesperson and advocate for the Makerspace, building relationships with key stakeholders, including community organizations, funders, local businesses, and government entities

  • Foster a culture of inclusivity, innovation, and community engagement

    PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT AND OPERATIONS

  • Oversee the development, implementation, and evaluation of programs, workshops, and events that align with Saskatoon Makerspace’s mission

  • Ensure the safety, accessibility, and maintenance of facilities and equipment

  • Develop partnerships to expand program offerings and drive community impact & involvement

    FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT

  • Develop and manage the annual budget in alignment with the organization’s financial goals

  • Lead fundraising efforts, including grant writing, donor cultivation, sponsorship development, and events

  • Ensure financial accountability and transparency through effective reporting and oversight

    STAFF AND VOLUNTEER MANAGEMENT

  • Recruit, hire, and supervise a diverse and talented team of staff and volunteers

  • Provide mentorship and professional development opportunities for team members

  • Foster a collaborative, positive, and productive work environment

    COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT AND ADVOCACY

  • Build and maintain relationships with Makerspace members, ensuring their needs and interests are reflected in organizational initiatives

  • Represent Saskatoon Makerspace at public events, media opportunities, and community forums.

  • Advocate for the importance of arts, innovation, and maker culture in Saskatoon

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

REQUIRED

  • Proven leadership experience, preferably in a nonprofit, creative, or community-focused organization.

  • Strong financial acumen, including budgeting, fundraising, and financial reporting

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build relationships across diverse communities

  • Experience managing programs, facilities, and teams

  • Passion for fostering creativity, innovation, and skill-sharing

  • Knowledge of maker culture, including tools, equipment, and practices such as woodworking, metalworking, 3D printing, or digital fabrication

  • Familiarity with grant writing and funding processes in Canada

  • Experience working with a Board of Directors or similar governance structure

  • A background in business administration, arts management, or a related field is an asset

PREFERRED

  • The operating environment is such that staff may be required to work extra hours to meet the needs of the organization. While staff need to be flexible in their work schedules, Saskatoon Makerspace is committed to providing appropriate time-in-lieu and/or compensation, as well as a healthy work-life balance.

Working Conditions

  • Some travel within Saskatoon is required to attend meetings, community events, and learning opportunities.

  • FTE: 1.0 FTE, full-time

  • Business Hours: Typical hours are 8am-4:30pm, with flexibility

    Compensation: The starting salary will be commensurate based on experience
